FAQ
PEA speculum
The PEA Speculum is a redesigned vaginal speculum that enables patient-controlled self-insertion. It was developed to promote comfort, autonomy, and a more positive experience during gynecological examinations while remaining fully compatible with existing clinical workflows in healthcare practices and hospitals.
A conventional speculum is typically inserted by the clinician and is largely shaped by established clinical routines, often at the expense of patient comfort and autonomy. The PEA Speculum shifts the most critical step of the examination - the insertion of the vaginal speculum - into the hands of the patient. This allows patients to control the pace, angle, and pressure of insertion themselves, which may help reduce tension and make the examination feel more comfortable and less intimidating.
The PEA Speculum is being developed in Switzerland and is currently undergoing clinical validation in collaboration with selected partner clinics and healthcare practices.Clinical studies are being conducted at institutions including Triemli Hospital Zurich, GynHealth AG Zurich, and Frauenpraxis Saemann in Solothurn. These studies have been approved by the responsible ethics committee and are designed to evaluate the usability, comfort, and clinical performance of the PEA Speculum. The findings from these studies play a key role in the ongoing development and validation of the device.
The PEA Speculum is designed for anyone with a vagina who undergoes gynecological examinations, particularly those who avoid or postpone preventive care because of pain, anxiety, embarrassment, or negative experiences associated with conventional speculums. At the same time, the PEA Speculum is intended for gynecologists, healthcare practices, and clinics that are committed to providing a more patient-centered, comfortable, and respectful examination experience.
Yes. Patient-controlled insertion of the PEA Speculum takes place exclusively as part of a gynecological examination under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. The PEA Speculum is currently being evaluated in clinical studies in Switzerland and is being developed in accordance with rigorous medical, regulatory, and safety standards. Our goal is to combine a high level of safety and clinical effectiveness with greater patient autonomy and comfort.
The PEA Speculum is currently in the final stages of product development and clinical validation. At the same time, the Peva Project is preparing for regulatory approval and market entry. We will share updates through our website and social media channels as soon as the PEA Speculum becomes available and is introduced in partner clinics and healthcare practices.
