FROM EXAMINATION TO EMPOWERMENT

Our vision: A New Standard for Gynecology

Pain or discomfort during a gynecological examination – should that still be the norm?

We believe the answer is no.

At the center of the issue is the vaginal speculum, an instrument that has remained largely unchanged for almost 200 years. Despite decades of medical progress, gynecological examinations continue to be shaped by tools and procedures designed primarily around clinical needs rather than patient experience.

The conventional insertion of the speculum often contributes to tension, discomfort, and a loss of control. While many other unpleasant healthcare experiences have been rethought and redesigned, gynecology has seen surprisingly little change.

Peva Project is developing the PEA Speculum: a new generation of gynecological examination instruments designed around patient autonomy, comfort, and sustainability.

Our goal is simple: to make speculum examinations more comfortable by fundamentally changing the interaction between patient and instrument. By rethinking the most critical moment of the examination – the insertion of the speculum – we aim to transform a routine procedure into a more dignified and self-determined experience.

Why a new speculum?

The PEA Speculum is a reimagined vaginal speculum that places patient autonomy at the center of gynecological care.

While conventional speculums have changed little over the past decades, the PEA Speculum shifts the most critical step of the examination—the insertion of the speculum—into the hands of the patient. This approach reduces tension, increases autonomy, and has been shown to improve the overall examination experience while remaining fully compatible with existing clinical workflows.

Developed in Switzerland, the PEA Speculum is based on validated user research, iterative prototype development, and ongoing clinical testing in partner clinics. Its design specifically addresses factors that often make conventional speculums uncomfortable: loss of control, anxiety, and the resulting involuntary contraction of the pelvic floor muscles.

By turning a passive experience into an active one, the PEA Speculum introduces a new approach to gynecological examinations.

Recognized by leading institutions in design, innovation, and healthcare, the PEA Speculum represents a new standard for women's health and a contemporary approach to one of gynecology's most essential instruments.
